| How can we inculcate reading habit in our kids? |
Date:6th April 09. Prashant Washimkar (Lecturer, Priyadarshini Engg) Today it is very sad to see that more and more kids are inclined towards playing computer games or video games and are less interested in reading books. Kids should begin with reading comics as it has a good moral with pictorial presentation which makes an interesting read. Then they should slowly shift to reading newspapers which ever stuff they find interesting. Parents have a major role in inculcating reading habits and they should encourage kids to do so. Jyoti Gautam (Teacher, New Apostolic School) Kids are more attracted towards drawing and pictures as they are more eye catchy, so parents should first try to attract them with more pictures and drawing books. Parents need to spend more time with kids to encourage reading habit, first they should try to read aloud some story book with a good moral. Schools have libraries and kids should be encouraged to use them. Teachers should spare some time to read good stories for kids. Suresh Babar (Civil Engineer) It is my habit to read good and knowledgeable stuff everyday, so the reading habit for our kids would ultimately depend on our family culture and parents should provide a reading friendly environment so that a kid develops interest at a very early stage. Reading should not look as a compulsion and burdensome activity and rather parents should make learning a fun. Teachers should read good story books to develop interest of kids. Smita Somkuwar (Homemaker) Today kids are more interested in watching cartoons on television than reading. So parents should make reading a fun activity by providing them with good comic books which has cartoons and pictorial representation to attract them and have learning stuff too. Parents should also restrict the time of watching TV or playing video games. Mothers have a greater role to play in inculcating good reading habits in their kids. Ashok Lanjewar (BSNL Employee) TV has today become a big headache for your kids and specially cartoon channels which our kids watch with keen interest. And truly reading habit is on a decline these days thanks to the intervention of technology in our households. Parents should begin by reading stories for them, in this way they can learn something new and then slowly they should give story books to read, which might help develop interest. Date: 6th April 09. Nagpur`s Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT)-developed machines have been selected by Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) for technology dissemination among KVIC units. Professor and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, VNIT, Dr P M Padole told that VNIT is among a very few technical institutions probably an IIT also, whose technologies have been selected by KVIC for technology dissemination. Machines developed by VNIT, Mosquito repellent coil making machine and dhoop sticks making machine have been selected by KVIC for the purpose. He said that KVIC has asked VNIT to produce nine machines each for their distribution among KVIC centres. Padole said that 50 participants from KVIC attended two national workshops and learnt about the technologies behind these machines. He said that VNIT has developed 6-7 rural technologies so far and is now planning to develop orange pulp processing machine, kernel dryer, Tur dal making machine, method for making cover of solar drums effective and reliable and a machine for handling a medicinal plant-Biba. He said that oil within the plant is poisonous but it is has also a medicinal value, adding that workers damage their hands while coming in contact with it. Machine for ginning and pressing cotton has already been developed by VNIT and now the institute is engaged in developing spinning process on a smaller scale. On cooperative basis, there can be composite units where all processes can be done at a one place including extraction of oil. Spinning aspect has been included to make it more economically viable, he added. The Government of India has presented Best Innovation Award to the VNIT in 2008. Technologies developed by VNIT include new version of the Black smith furnace along with the heat treatment boxes, modified double roller Gin, stirrup (rectangular, square or circular shaped reinforced element) making machine, Mosquito repellent coil making machine and Dhoop sticks making machine. He said that Dhoop stick is one of the products manufactured by the Govigyan Anusandhan Kendra. Initially, the Dhoop sticks were manufactured manually and the method was found to suffer from various drawbacks like poor quality and low productivity. There was a scope to overcome these drawbacks by using low cost mechanisation and hence VNIT designed the hand operated extruder for the production of Dhoop sticks so that the rate of production increases and also improves the quality of product. | Hi-tech police station coming up at Kamptee |
Date: 6th April 09. EVEN as the city is yet to get its earlier proposed several police stations due to the Government apathy, yet another proposal has come up for setting a new police station at Kamptee. It will be an ‘ideal’ police station and will help boost the morale of the Nagpur police. Sources close to the crucial development said that it will be one of the most hi-tech police station in the region. An amount of Rs 43 lakh has been earmarked for the infrastructure of the new station. It may be recalled that Minister of State for Home Nitin Raut had announced in the state assembly last year that the city will get five police stations by March. However, the month is gone and there seems to be no signs in sight of the Government making any move in this direction. Despite of getting all the necessary permissions from the Police Department, etc, the file is eating dust in Mumbai for absence of the Government’s movement, thereby depriving the city of the developed police infrastructure. It may be noted that the delay is not due to the code of conduct ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. The announcement of the city getting the stations in Bajaj Nagar, Somalwada, Rameshwari, Mankapur and Shanti Nagar was done last year itself. Underlining the need for developing police infrastructure in proportion to the population growth, Raut had also said that the city police infrastructure would be upgraded as soon as possible. He had promised to provide global positioning system (GPS) to city police that would help police in rushing its forces to trouble spots quickly. But all this too seems to be one of those enormous promises that the Government had made and did not keep. Presently, the city has 21 police stations. For detail: www.news.hitavadaonline.com |
