Tuvar Dal Ambot

Preparatoin time: 20 minutes

Serves 2-4

Ingredients:
250 gm. tuvar dal 1 cup raw peanuts [peeled] 
30 gm. tamarind ½ coconut
2 green chillies  Some coriander leaves
½ tsp. turmeric powder ½ tsp. garam masala
2 tsp. oil ¼ tsp. mustard seeds
A pinch of asafoetida 1 tbsp. jaggery [syrup]
1/3 tsp. salt ¼ tsp. red chili powder
To prepare garam masala:
Grind a mixture of cloves, cardamom, cinnamon nutmeg and mace.
Method:
  1. Wash and soak dal in water for 1 hour. Cover tamarind with water for ½ hour; then squeeze out the pulp. Grind coconut to a paste. Boil the dal in the water in which it was soaked along with peanuts, red chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt and cook till the dal and the peanuts are soft.
  2. Mix in coconut paste, tamarind pulp, jaggery syrup and the garam masala. Simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from fire and keep it hot. Heat 2 tbsp. oil and add asafoetida and mustard seeds stop popping, pour the dal in. Serve hot decorated with coriander leaves and green chillies.
